Among the many production processes of fiberglass, hand lay-up process is the earliest and most widely used molding method in fiberglass industrial production in China. From the perspective of countries around the world, the hand lay-up method still accounts for a considerable proportion, for example, Japan's hand lay-up method also accounts for 48%, indicating that it still has vitality.
As the name suggests, the hand lay-up molding process mainly relies on manual operation, with little or no use of mechanical equipment. Hand lay-up molding method, also known as contact molding method, does not release any reaction by-products during solidification, so there is no need to add high pressure to remove reaction by-products. It can be formed at room temperature and normal pressure. Therefore, both small and large products can be hand molded.
However, there is a common misconception in our composite materials industry that the hand lay-up process is simple, not self-taught, and lacks technical expertise!
With the development of the fiberglass industry, although new forming processes continue to emerge, the hand lay-up process has its unique advantages. Especially in the hand lay-up process, the wall thickness can be changed arbitrarily according to the requirements of different products. Different specifications and models of fiber reinforcement materials and sandwich materials can be combined arbitrarily, and different materials can be designed and selected according to the stress corresponding to the required load of the product. Therefore, hand lay-up molding technology still holds a significant proportion in the production of fiberglass in various countries around the world. For some large, small batch, or special shaped products, it may not be possible to produce them using other processes or when the cost is high, it is more appropriate to use hand lay-up technology.
Of course, after all, it is human operation, and humans are the most reliable and also the least reliable! The hand lay-up process relies heavily on the hands and specialized tools of workers, relying on molds to make fiberglass products. Therefore, the quality of products largely depends on the operational skills and sense of responsibility of workers. It requires workers to have proficient operational skills, rich operational experience, and a good understanding of the process flow, product structure, material properties, surface treatment of molds, quality of surface coating layer, control of adhesive content, placement of reinforcement materials, uniformity of product thickness, as well as various factors that affect product quality, strength, etc. Especially for the judgment and handling of problems during operation, not only does it require rich practical experience, And it is necessary to have a certain basic knowledge of chemistry, as well as a certain ability to recognize maps.
The hand lay-up process may seem simple on the surface, but the quality of the product is closely related to the proficiency of the workers in pasting technology and their attitude towards work. The differences in experience and technical skills of operators inevitably lead to performance differences in products. In order to ensure the final performance consistency of fiberglass products as much as possible, it is necessary to provide pre job training for fiberglass hand lay-up workers, and regularly conduct improvement learning and pass assessments.
