The main applications of fiberglass products in the communication industry

1. Application on communication radar antenna cover

Radar antenna cover is a functional structural component that integrates electrical performance, structural strength, stiffness, aerodynamic shape, and special functional requirements. Its main function is to improve the aerodynamic shape of the aircraft, protect the antenna system from external environmental influences, extend the lifespan of various parts of the entire system, and protect the accuracy of the antenna surface and position.

The traditional production materials are generally steel plates and aluminum plates, which have many disadvantages such as high quality, lack of corrosion resistance, single processing technology, and inability to form products with overly complex shapes. Their applications have been limited and the number of applications is decreasing.

As a kind of material with excellent performance, the conductive filler can be added if the conductivity is required, and the structural strength can be completed by designing stiffeners and changing the thickness locally according to the strength requirements. The shape can be made into different shapes according to the requirements, and it is corrosion resistant, anti-aging resistant and light in weight. It can be completed by hand paste, autoclave, RTM and other processes to ensure that the radome meets the performance requirements and service life requirements.

2. Application on Mobile Antennas for Communication

In recent years, with the rapid development of mobile communication, the consumption of mobile antenna has also increased sharply, and the consumption of radome as the protective coat of mobile antenna has also increased significantly. The material of mobile radome must have wave permeability, outdoor aging resistance, wind load resistance and batch consistency.

In addition, its service life must be long enough, otherwise it will cause significant inconvenience to installation and maintenance, and increase costs. Previously, mobile antenna covers were mostly made of PVC material, but this material is not resistant to aging, has poor wind load resistance, and has a short service life, resulting in a decreasing number of uses.

FRP material has good wave permeability, strong outdoor aging resistance, good wind resistance, good batch consistency using pultrusion production process, and a service life of more than 20 years, which fully meets the requirements of mobile radome. Now it has gradually replaced PVC plastic as the first choice for mobile radome.

The use of PVC plastic antenna covers has been banned in countries such as Europe and America, and all antenna covers are made of fiberglass. With the further improvement of material requirements for mobile antenna covers in China, the pace of using fiberglass materials instead of PVC plastic to make mobile antenna covers is also accelerating.

3. Application on satellite receiving antennas

The satellite receiving antenna is a key equipment of the satellite ground station, which directly affects the quality of the received satellite signal and the stability of the system. The material requirements for satellite antenna are light weight, strong wind resistance, anti-aging, high dimensional accuracy, no deformation, long service life, corrosion resistance, and designable reflector.

Traditional production materials are generally steel plates and aluminum plates, which are made using stamping technology. The thickness is generally thin, not corrosion-resistant, and the service life is short, usually only 3-5 years, with increasing limitations in use.

Fiberglass reinforced plastic material is used and produced according to SMC molding process. It has good size stability, light weight, aging resistance, good batch consistency, and strong wind resistance. Stiffeners can also be designed according to different requirements to improve strength. Its service life is more than 20 years. It can be designed to lay metal mesh and other materials to achieve satellite reception function, which fully meets the use requirements in terms of performance and technology.

SMC satellite antennas have been widely used with excellent results. They are maintenance free outdoors, have good reception performance, and have a very promising application prospect.

4. Application in railway antennas

The railway has undergone its sixth speed increase, and train speeds are getting faster and faster. Signal transmission must also be fast and accurate. Signal transmission is completed through antennas, so the impact of antenna covers on signal transmission directly affects the transmission of information.

The antenna cover for fiberglass railway antennas has been in use for quite some time. In addition, mobile communication base stations cannot be established at sea, so mobile communication equipment cannot be used. The antenna cover used for antennas must withstand long-term erosion from the sea climate, and ordinary materials cannot meet the requirements. The performance characteristics of fiberglass materials are now largely reflected.
